.She's more like my Humbert Humbert
Allowing room for ambiguity, I decided to rely on
advertisements that I posted for the people that I could work with. I asked
these individuals to talk about a fictional character that is based on
themselves, on camera, during our fifteen to forty-five minute meetings.
For the past year, I have been exploring the idea of
empathic introspection – how one’s identity and empathy for others is developed
through interaction with others. Just as how we interpret and empathise with
characters that writers often base on people they know in real life.
I like the idea of collaboration. I meet everyone who
shows interest, and in order to remain in complete control of the process and
outcome of my work, I set straightforward guidelines while allowing the freedom
to elaborate.
Other than the really different approaches they had chosen
to take, I was also interested in the different gestural expressions and
mannerisms that they had.
